Thank you for fundraising for The Film and TV Charity!
We’re the industry charity for those that work behind the scenes in film, TV and cinema, and are here to help whether you’re a researcher or a writer, in casting or production, distribution or exhibition.
The charity was founded in 1924, and thanks to the generosity of the people and organisations in our industry we’re able to offer a wide range of services. We provide a 24/7 Film and TV Support Line, access to financial and legal advice, and help and support for everything around mental wellbeing, discrimination, bullying and harassment. Plus, we have a whole host of practical tools and resources available to download for people who just need some guidance and advice.
Your fundraising helps us offer these services to people who need them, making the industry a much better place to work.
Jen decided to set up a birthday fundraiser on Facebook to thank the Charity for the support we gave her during the pandemic.
“I’ve been so glad to be supported by the Film and TV Charity. The last two and a half years have been a strange mental health rollercoaster. 2020 was a tough time for all and by the end of it my mental health has not been the same. I still continue to heal, and I can only hope what happened to me doesn’t happen again. Being bullied is something I would NEVER wish on anyone. I can certainly vouch for the emails and phone calls I continue to have with Justine at the Film and TV Charity. Justine has helped me with the support I needed professionally when I thought that was it for me.”
“Why am I running the London Marathon?
I was introduced to the Film and TV Charity by an amazing medic on a job where I was particularly struggling. It can be very scary to suffer with mental illness, even more so at work. Even more so when work is your dream job in an industry where word of mouth and recommendation alone keeps you employed. After doing some research, I was shocked to discover that 9 out of 10 people working in my industry had experienced a mental health problem and 55% of respondents to a study conducted by the charity into the crisis had considered taking their own lives.
“The Film and TV Charity has a 24/7 Support Line, it has access to counselling, it has directions to courses on how to help those on your team who might be finding things hard, and it shows that we are not alone, and it’s OK to admit that there are bad days. The resources supplied by the Charity and the advice from the medic that day made me brave enough to tell people what was going on. And I was so incredibly supported by my team and bosses as soon as I did. I wish I had spoken out earlier.
“So, this is for anyone whose brain tells them they aren’t good enough, that others are better, that they can’t do something, and they should give up. My brain told me once that I could never run a marathon. Just watch me!”
Some fundraising ideas
There are so many ways you can get involved and have a great time while fundraising for us. Previously we’ve had people raise money by:
- Walking long distances – Land’s End to John o’ Groats is a fantastic challenge!
- Running marathons – or even conquering a 5k after completing that running programme
- Live stream or live tweet a watch-along of your favourite shows with a donation link
- Writing books – dedicating a percentage of the sales to us
- Baking – we all love a bake sale, or even afternoon tea!
- Creating a birthday fundraiser on Facebook
